Evocative Shadows, The Mezzotints of Hamanishi Katsunori (US shipping)
Description
Hamanishi Katsunori is a master of mezzotint, an intaglio technique that relies on repetitive motion to create an image and is capable of producing a broad range of deep blacks through bright whites. When first developed in seventeenth-century Europe, the tonal richness that mezzotint made possible caused a sensation, but eventually the technique was eclipsed and nearly died out. It’s modern revival can be credited in large part to Japanese printmakers who exploited the medium’s expressive possibilities—a revolution begun by France-based printmakers Hasegawa Kiyoshi (1891-1980) and Hamaguchi Yōzō (1909-2000) and brought into the twenty-first century by Hamanishi Katsunori (born 1949), whose life and work are the subject of this volume. |
